In Indonesia, Islamic school is well-known as an educational institution holding the teaching-learning process based on the national educational system. Historically, Islamic school cantains not only Islamic teaching but also indigenous factors because it has existed since Hindu-Buddhist era named “Padepokan” and it now changes as “Pesantren” or Islamic school because of Islamic influence.
Pabelan Islamic school, located in Pabelan, Mungkid, Magelang, Regency, has a long history covering three times of the awakening of the institution. Around 1800, Kiai Raden Muhammad Ali set up this institution but it stopped because of Prince Diponegoro’s war ( 1825-1830 ). Around 1900, Kiai Anwar and Kiai Asror reopened the institution but it closed in 1953 because of Kiai Asror’s death. Finally on August 28, 1965, Kiai Hamam Ja’far activated educational activities and Islamic teaching using modern techniques named Pabelan Islamic School.
It has Kulliyat al-Mu’allimin al-Islamiyah ( KMI ) as the basis of formal education and the wakaf foundation of Pabelan Islamic School handles the teaching learning process to create the institution based on not only tafaquh fid dien and social education but also workshop for Pabelan society.
Geographically, Pabelan Islamic School strategically lays in 5,5 Ha land in the middle of social educational activities. Magelang City, Taruna Nusantara High School, Military Academy, and Seminary High School ( Catholic School ) are around 14 Km in the north. Van Lith High School is around 4 Km in the east. Buddhist temple near Mendut is around 4 Km and Borobudur temple is around 6 Km in the west. Yogyakarta City is around 35 Km in the south.
Almukarram Kiai Hamam Ja’far had leaded Pabelan Islamic School for 28 years until he died on March 18, 1993. Before Kiai Hamam Ja’far died, on May 11, 1991 in an official way he establish the wakaf foundation of Islamic School in presence of botary Mrs. Kunsri Hastuti, S.H. so that it has formal legality. Then he propose to Department of Religious Republic of Indonesia to open program Madrasah Tsanawiyah ( MTs ) and Madrasah Aliyah ( MA ) too. The first chief of MTs at one’s elbow Drs. Radjasa Mu’tasim and chief of MA at one’s elbow Drs. Ahmad Mustofa.
At this, period 2001 - 2006, the leader Islamic School comprised of 3 leaders sharing of works and authority selfexplanatory so detail. KH Ahmad Mustofa, SH as General Leader do the monitoring and coordination in all sectors dan activities then operationally helped by 2 other leaders so answerable to Wakaf Foundation. KH Ahmad Najib Amin as vice of leader I manage the education and develop the performance teachers and students. Then Kiai Muhammad Balya as vice of leader II cared of well regulated finance administration and budget discipline, develop the discipline and quality of Human Resource ( SDM ) so keep and develop the facilities.
Cooperation with outside parties, either the institution of government or private agency, either domestic or abroad judged by leader to agreed or disagreed. Example this time Pabelan Islamic School cooperate with National Planning Board RI ( Telecenter and Course of Inggris Language ), with Department of Religious Affairs RI ( reinforcement Science of Technology Program, STEP 2 IDB ), so with Education Board RI ( similarization of KMI with High School ), else with local government Magelang as well as many other cooperation it's never to snap as yet.
FACILITIES
Pabelan Islamic School is located in a 5,5 Ha land consisting of 18 classrooms, 1 teacher’s room, 1 guidance and counseling room, 1 health room, 2 libraries, 7 laboratories, 2 meeting rooms, 9 sport fields, 1 student’s cooperation, 1 quarantine room, 1 studio band room, 2 OPP offices, 14 male student dormitory rooms, 13 female student dormitory rooms, and 4 teacher’s houses. A mosque in the middle of the complex and two religious leader’s houses. The arrangement of building in Pabelan Islamic School is based on a human life cycle starting from the library ( Iqra’ ), the yard ( life ), the mosque ( Allah’s service ), the cemetery ( death ), the large field ( the awakening in Padang Mahsyar ).
